Dear Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students:
We are very excited to be able to welcome you to campus! As you’d expect, we’re implementing some serious sanitation and service measures to ensure you can dine with us as safely and comfortably as possible.
While COVID-19 safety is a key priority, it is not our only one. We still believe that food has an important role to play in individual wellness and in building culture and community here at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Our chefs will still be cooking from scratch, using fresh local and seasonal ingredients that meet our sustainability standards. (We were thrilled when the Humane Society of the United States ranked Bon Appétit the #1 food service company, the only one with an A+ grade, in their recent Food Industry Scorecard!)
In addition, you will continue to find abundant plant-forward, vegetarian, and vegan options as well as ones that are made without gluten-containing ingredients every day. If you have a food allergy or other dietary restriction, please reach out to our Executive Chef Matthew Leeper to make sure you can enjoy plenty of delicious food, safely, with us.
FAQs for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
So basically, how is dining going to work?
At the Vonderschmitt Café, you will find a sanitizing station located at the entrance. Masks must be worn upon entering the café and must be worn at all times, exception being when seated and eating. Don’t forget to choose a sanitizing station and stand in line (6 feet apart please!) We have implemented a touchless and cashless system in dining operations. You will swipe your RHIT ID, credit, or debit card yourself.
Proceed to one of the mirrored serving lines. Each line offers identical options. No need to wander from line to line. Follow the directional signage and remember to social distance. We will have a deli/soup option as well as vegan and options for special diets.
Stations in the café are set up for speed. Desserts and other items are prepackaged to reduce the number of decisions being made when ordering. If you decide to take your meal to go, please alert the cashier and you will have one additional scan for a Greenie. Please note that all Greenies must be returned and you will only be given two at a time. You must return one before an additional will be given. *New this year*, guests will be charged $6.00 for each Greenie not returned to our cafes. Our serving lines will give you the meal on a plate and you will be responsible for placing in your to go container. Please note that only one container will be given for each meal swipe.
What’s the deal with masks and seating?
We’ll be wearing masks while serving you. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is requiring students to wear masks in lines and while walking around the café and to remove them only while eating. We are offering Greenie takeout containers to encourage guests to dine outside the café. We are asking that if you return to the serving area or when you leave, the mask must be placed on when you leave your eating location.
For those who choose to eat in, seating has been reduced by about 25%. There will be plexiglass partitions separating individual seats at each table, and sanitize-me/just-sanitized signs indicating a seat’s status for you. Please do not rearrange furniture or remove plexiglass dividers.
What’s happening with the self-serve salad bar, condiment station, soda station, etc?
We’re happy to serve you! All self-service items are being reconfigured to be served by our staff.
- Condiments: are available on our condiment table as well as extra napkins and disposable silverware if you forget our silverware. This way you don’t have to reenter our café.
- Silverware: Our silverware will be placed behind the serving area and our café servers will be happy to give you silverware when making your plate.
- Beverages: Our beverage machines will open up but please make sure to watch the directional signage telling you what direction to walk in this area. Per the Health Department, we are not allowing any outside containers into our café. >>
Can I still get Made Without Gluten-Containing Ingredients meals (MWG-CI)? Where have the packaged gluten-free items gone?
Menu items made without gluten-containing ingredients will be available in our café by request from behind the appropriate station. Just stop by this station we will be happy to assist you.
I am vegan/vegetarian, where do I look for items?
We will have vegan and vegetarian options available throughout the cafés, always incorporating these into our regular menus for all stations. Also, Roots station has been relocated and will offer items for our vegan and dietary restricted guests.
